Sensex Down 263 Points In Early Trade; Nifty Dips Below 10,400

Indian shares opened on a weak note Monday as fears of a global trade war, disappointing services sector data from China and worries that Italy's national elections could deliver an anti-establishment government overshadowed the BJP's spectacular performance in recently-held elections in three North Eastern states.

The benchmark BSE Sensex was down 263 points or 0.77 percent at 33,784 in early trade while the broader Nifty index was down as much as 96 points or 0.92 percent at 10,362.

Metal stocks paced the decliners, with Vedanta, Coal India, Tata Steel and Hindalco losing 2-4 percent. HCL Technologies, Infratel, GAIL, Tata Motors, Yes Bank and Aurobindo Pharma were among the other prominent decliners.
